Introduction

Armed conflict of World War ceased with an armistice between Germany and the Allies on 11 November 1918. As part of that agreement, German Forces on the Western Front returned to Germany, east of the Rhine River, and Allied Forces subsequently occupied the area of the ‘Rhineland’ with bridgeheads at the cities of Mayence (Mainz), Coblenz & Cologne.
