Despite being an envelope front, an interesting & colorful item the red crayon "P" probably indicting Prisoner. $12

23. US October 1918. Postcard to soldier in Detention Camp, Chickamauga, Greenleaf, GA, forwarded to Ft. Myer, VA. This was just an isolation camp for recruits not a punishment facility. Recruits were first assigned to the detention group and remained there during their period of isolation and until their records were completed by the personnel office. $10

25. US. 1918. Cover to POW 1st Lt. Charles R. Codman, Rastatt, censored in NY. Light toning at right edge. Charles R. Codman served in the American Field Service in France during World War I before becoming a bomber pilot assigned to the 96th Bombardment Squadron, United States Air Service. On 16 Sep 1918, Charles was captured and held as a Prisoner of War in Germany until he escaped just after the Armistice with fellow American aviators Robert Browning, Henry Lewis, and James Normal Hall (author of "Mutiny on the Bounty"). During World War II, Charles was chosen by General George S. Patton to serve as his aide de camp. Charles wrote about his WW I experiences in the book "Contact," and he wrote about his WW II experiences with General Patton in the book "Drive." $150

USPA China registry killer, with datestamp on back, both faint, on cover from Shanghai newspaper to Chicago with US Shanghai censor 1400 (top of the number range assigned to Shanghai; usage not recorded in PH/AEF 2nd edition). Clean 1” tear in face of cover clear of everything. Still, as nice a US Shanghai censor usage as you are likely to find. $125

Message includes “Looks like they are getting us ready to go to Russia,” a deployment that did not occur. Of the 1.9 million men in the AEF at the end of November 1918, only 10,000 were in the Tank Corps. $10

30. US. AEF. December 1918. APO 701 postmark with date error 1911 (not mentioned in PH/AEF 2nd edition) on cover from man in 346th infantry. Letter enclosed describes and illustrates farm. An unusual bit of soldier art in a nice cover. $15

32. India. 9 Jan1932. Peshawar censor handstamp on postal card with business inquiry to a stamp company, with censorship initiated due to the Red Shirt Rebellion. This censorship lasted for less than 2 months in 1931-32. Rare. $150

33. Palestine. Egypt. British civil administration period. 9 May 1922. PC entitled "Mount of Ascension. Garden of Gethsemane" to Mataria bearing E.E.F. 1m & 5m overprinted Palestine & tied Jerusalem cds with single ring-belted Mataria (10 May) arrival cds. Mataria is a district in the northern region of Greater Cairo, east of the Nile. $25

34. Trieste. Italy. Austria. 28 July 1919. Austrian postage tied by Italian Trieste postmark with Trieste censor on postcard. Card with fold and scuffs on picture side but a very unusual combination. At the time this card was sent the Treaty of Saint Germain-en-Ley had not yet been signed, so the legal status of Trieste was still undecided (though the Italians had occupied it since November 1918), perhaps accounting for the acceptance of the Austrian postage. $20

38. Algeria. Cover to the Red Cross in Geneva, sent 18 February 1943 from Alger RP with roller cancel on #145. German censor in Paris (A.x). $3

39. Australia, Concession rate. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) negotiated special concession rates for servicemen during and shortly after WWII. These 2 covers both have the purple, boxed handstamp “R.A.A.F. Postal/Concession rate” on the front. They are sent to 1 woman in Pennsylvania, one postmarked Melbourne 9 July 1945, the second postmarked RAAF PO, 9 December 1946. While the serviceman concession rate was 1d, these were being sent to a civilian outside the Commonwealth, so required an extra 2½d postage. The 1945 cover is an RAAF envelope (logo on reverse) and the 1946 has the “Kanga” cachet. The sender advanced from Corporal to Sergeant during the time! $12

40. Australia. November 1941. Two-ocean cover Clipper cover from internee in Camp 2 to GB. Postmarked Melbourne 19 November 1941, so carried on the last East-bound Clipper flight. The 2/- stamps are damaged. Camp 2 (= Tatura, Victoria) censor and return address (E. Goldschmidt E39592) and the fact that this is going to England suggest that sender was one of the “Dunera Boys,” mainly German Jewish refugees transported from the UK to Australia in the face of possible German invasion. A magnificent conjunction of historical events. $100

42. Bermuda – GB. Censored airmail. 24 Sep 1940. Hotel Bermudiana printed slightly grubby-looking envelope to Camborne, Cornwall bearing 1938 GV1 issue 1½d & 1d tied Hamilton Bermuda Aquarium. One of the world’s best slogan showing penguin with red on white P.C. 102 OPENED BY CENSOR 77 label (CCSG CL 2). A little unusual as these labels were mainly used on transit mail. $15

45. Burma – US. Censored first voyage. 2 Jan 1941. Maiden Voyage SS Executor American Export Lines printed pictorial envelope to Waterbury, Conn bearing 1a Commemoration/Postage Stamp/6th May 1840 on 2a6p tied Rangoon cds with violet, circular. Posted on the High Seas/Maiden Voyage/S.S./Executor/1940 & triangular Passed/Censor/7/Rangoon handstamps & typed on reverse. Date of sailing - November 4, 1940; Date of receipt of mail - February 24, 1941. $9

46. Canal Zone. 17 Dec 1941, Coco Solo, Canal Zone and with circular “Passed By/Naval Censor,” SC 117. Coco Solo was a US submarine base and hospital with 3 V-class submarines stationed there in December 1941: Barracuda, Bass, and Bonita. The base closed in 1960, and the city of Cavita is now at that site. $10

47. Ceylon. British forces green Honour envelope franked for air mail with Ceylon #286e (perf 11.5x11, issued 1942) and sent to Bournemouth, England. Cancelled with circular barred numeral obliterator, number not legible. No date stamp but annotated as received 15 March 1943. Signed, as required, by the sender. $10

49. Ceylon. 30 Oct 1942 Indian Section Base Office No.9, assigned to Columbo, Ceylon, and sent free franked to Durban, South Africa. RAF censor type R10 with censor number 955 was used only in Ceylon. The date is the latest known postmark for this station (per Colley & Garrard). $15

54. Dutch East Indies. June 1941. Marine censor on cover from an American at Fleigkamp Moro Krembangan (a seaplane base in East Java). This Google snippet indicates that the sender was a flight instructor: “... William R. Turner, a former PBY ... with reference to the Morokrembangan MLD flight school.” Cover with rubber band tear at top. $20

55. France. 1940. 90c. PC with formular back for reporting family news. Postmarked Bordeaux to Pau with back filled out. Handstamped INADMIS and REOUR L'ENVOYEUR; no censor markings. Small scuff on back. $10

56. France. Germany. Civilian correspondence of 32 covers (no contents) posted between December 1942 and March 1943 and sent between a woman in Nanterre, occupied France, and a man in Neckarsulm, Germany. Variety of stamps, censor markings, and auxiliary markings, including “Zuruck/Retour” on the last few covers sent to Germany. Condition varies, but generally very good for non-philatelic mail of that period. $25

57. France. Germany. Two 1943 covers from France (one Paris, one Bordeaux/Gironde) to the same woman in Wien, both bearing the 1.50f Petain stamps (alas, not the propaganda forgeries), and passed through the Frankfurt censor without opening. $5

59. Germany. Civilian mail. Cover mailed 17 September 1940 from Hamburg to Chicago. Walter Reppenhagen, the addressee, arrived in the US in 1920, and Alma Reppenhagen, the sender, was his sister. Censor sealing tape on the reverse, applied by the Wehrmacht. Franked with a 15pf maroon Hindenburg and a pair of the 25pf “Leipzigger Messe” ultramarine. Clear strikes of Hamburg dated bridge cancel. Sent air mail. $5

60. Germany. Civilian mail. Business-size cover mailed from Linz, Austria to Rome, registered, air mail, 11 April 1942. Franked with a pair of Germany #B202, and singles of #B189 & 524, all cancelled with Linz (Donau) bridge cancels. Censored at Munich (d) and resealed, with Italian arrival label “Agenzia Recapito,” partial, on reverse. Hotel advertising on front. Colorful cover. $15

61. Germany. Civilian mail. 1945. Űberroller cover. Window envelope with Hitler stamp postmarked Summerhouses 31 March 45 and occupation censor handstamp and sellotape. No backstamps. $15

62. Germany. Forced labor camps. Nine Postkarte from the forced labor camp Lager Rheinhold at Wiesbaden-Biebrich, all from the same prisoner to 3 different people in Le Beausset in France. All with the camp’s handstamp in black and all censored in Frankfurt (Ae in red circle). One Hindenburg card, others Hitler, some uprated. The date span is from 7 February 1944 to 31 July 1944. $25

63. Germany. Forces in Luxembourg. Feldpost from a member of the Reichsarbeitdienst (RAD), the pre-military work service group, who carried spades rather than rifles. This man was stationed in Luxembourg and the postcard was sent to FP 35988, another RAD unit, location unknown. Dumb bridge cancel dated 17 September 1941. $7

64. Germany. Forces in Russia. Feldpost cover with contents, from FP #L17042, dated 4 May 1942. That number was assigned to the 5th parachute antitank detachment in the 7th Air Division, stationed with the 6th Army near Leningrad. The parachute unit just had an appallingly high casualty rate in the invasion of Crete, and Hitler rewarded them by sending the unit to the Russian Front! With red FP number stamp and black FP date stamp. Sent to Germany. $10

65. Germany. Forces in Russia. Series of 8 covers, all from Feldpost #16848, mailed from the Russian front from 1 soldier to his family. Dates cover the period from 10 May to 11 July 1943. All with enclosures. Condition generally very good - three roughly opened, not affecting markings. $20

Most of the units are identified (from Kannapin’s books) but not all locations could be determined. One registered cover. Condition very good to excellent, markings clear. $25

Sender with same family name as recipient suggesting he was one of the (ca. 1350 per Michel, 2,000 per https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/the-hidden-past-of-swiss-nazi-era-volunteers/7135628 ) Swiss serving with the Germans. FP 42023 = 2 Kompanie Armee-Nachrichten-Regiment 549. Michel FP (1991) p. 240, #8a, DM 1800 (which at the time was about $840). A scarce and attractive cover. $250

Censored at Cologne (A.c), but not opened, so this is likely to have been sent by a volunteer with the German Army. $25

91. Philippines. Civilian mail. Civil mails in the Philippines censored by the Japanese began with the invasion and ceased June 30, 1943. This registered cover was mailed in Manila December 29, 1941, used locally, with Scott 384 & 417. The cover was censored by the Japanese with bilingual sealing tape on the right side, reading “Opened by the Censors/Passed Inspection” in a red box, and tied to the cover with purple, boxed handstamps reading the same, front and back. Registered receiver for 1/1/42 on the reverse, also “Second Notice/March 22, 1942.” On the front are two straight-line handstamps: “Unclaimed,” and “return to sender.” $12

100. US. Forces in Germany. 26 March 1945. APO 261 postmark on cover return addressed 705 Tank Destroyer Bn., APO 430. APO 261 was located in Kirchberg for only 8 days (23-30 March). The 705th Tank Destroyer Bn. was in Bastogne throughout the siege and received a PUC for its actions there. It crossed the Rhine 4 days after this cover was sent. $15

101. US. Forces in Germany. Two Christmas cards: one, in color, was printed for use by the Advance Section, Communication Zone, of the European Theater of Operations, and was attached to the US First Army. ADSEC-COMZ handled the logistics for the combat troops, and were always at or near the front lines. The second card, in black, shows a grim scene of crushed concrete blocks, and was used by the 23rd Armored Engineer Battalion. The inside of this card states: “from Somewhere in Germany.” No covers and no dates, but both were probably sent for Christmas 1944. See the images for both inside and outside. $10

134. France. Operation Artimon. A. Premier-Maitre L’her – F 792 – Corvette. This cover was canceled at “Military Post Office 610” which is located at Djibouti. Usually when a French ship is in that area, mail is sent to that post office instead of Paris Naval. 11-2 1991. MI: Fr 2766, 2800.

138. France. Operation Daguet. 15 Mai 1991. BPM 640, King Khaled Military City, Saudi Arabia “Detachement Prevotal – Gendarmerie Nationale.” Properly used “free frank” cover with the “Operation Daguet – Forces Francaises en Arabie Saoudite” circular cachet. The “Gendarmerie Nationale” dated rubber stamp indicates that this cover went to France inside a military police pouch bag. BPM 640 was opened on 09 Oct 1990 and closed on 04 Jun 1991.*

139. France. Operation Daguet. 9 - 4 1991. BPM 647, Koweit City , Kuwait. BPM 647 was only opened for 3 months after Kuwait was liberated, in support of the French Embassy as well as small demining units. BPM 647 was opened on 25 Feb 1991 and closed on 19 May 1991. Mi: FR 2821.*
