Members should be aware that the Collectors Club will be offering Zoom access to a presentation about mail services during the U. S. Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wednesday, November 4th \u00a0in person at the Collectors Club<\/strong> as well as online via Zoom <\/p>\n\n\n\n The American Civil War: Suspended Mail Services Across the Line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Our Nov. 4th presentation will explain and illustrate the handling of the mails across the Union and Confederate lines by government and private carriers, between the time of the U.S. closure of the Washington, DC-to-Richmond, Va. postal route on May 24, 1861 and its termination of all communication with the C.S.A. on August 16, 1861. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Among the highlights of the presentation will be the Louisville, Ky. postmaster-applied unique “SOUTHN. LETTER \/ UNPAID” handstamp on a cover sent from the Confederate State of North Carolina to indicate that U.S. postage from the seceded states would no longer be recognized as valid in the loyal states; a cover carried by the Adams Express Co southbound across the lines, outside of the mails, from their New York office to their Knoxville, Tenn. office; and a cover carried by the Southern Express Company northbound across the lines, outside of the mails, from their Nashville, Tenn. office to the Adams Express office in Louisville, where it was placed in the United States mails. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dan Knowles<\/strong> is an experienced collector, researcher, writer and exhibitor on numerous aspects of Civil War postal history whose exhibits have won Grand Awards at several major stamp shows. His most recent presentation to the Collectors Club was in 2024 on the subject of the demonetization U.S. stamps in 1861.
