Louis Reif (1925-2022)

Louis passed away in March, 2022, at the age of 97. He was an avid collector of WWII, Korean and Vietnam military correspondence covers.

For many years, he made donations to the Society above the dues amount. This generous act was acknowledged annually in various issues of the Bulletin.

He and his wife Lib Mary Reif were very involved in COLOPEX 1996. Per the Bulletin of Summer 1996, we see the following report from George Cosentini:

A few words, if I may, about COLOPEX. It was a class act. The organizers made all of us coming in from all corners of the States feel completely at home; Lib Mary Reif “adopted” several of us, Louis Reif actually was in several places at once to make our stay at the show truly fun and memorable. Wine and cheese tasting party, a function of the Award program, was no slouch either….

Reif, Louis E. Jr.

1925 - 2022

Louis Reif, DDS, age 97, passed away on March 13, 2022 at home. Louis was preceded in death by his wife Lib-Mary and daughter Libby Lou. He is survived by son, David; son-in-law, Mike; granddaughters, Rachel and Cassidy; and one great-grandson. He will be missed by loving care-givers, Sheila, Darlene and Paige and special neighbors, Ron and Michele.

Born and raised in Columbus, Louis spent summers at his grandfather’s farm on the banks of Paint Creek, near Bainbridge, OH; this inspired a passion for native fish and wildlife.

He was a Navy veteran, serving as a pharmacy technician in the South Pacific during WWII. Louis graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, and practiced dentistry on the south side of Columbus for almost 50 years.

He was an avid stamp-collector, with a special interest in the postal art of Herman Maul, and lifelong member of the American Philatelic Society, the German Philatelic Society and the Columbus Stamp Club.

An intellect to the end, Louis read everything he could get his hands on, starting each day with the Columbus Dispatch. He looked forward to visits from and lively discussions with friends.
