Larry Sherman M.D.

Larry was a longtime collector and member of the APS and the APRL. He was a prolific philatelic writer and speaker and he donated many books to philatelic libraries. He was was also an exhibitor, sharing his treasured collections with others.

He and I were good friends for over 50 years. Much of that was in the San Diego area where we were both very active in the philatelic scene.

Born in 1930 in Queens, New York, like many of his era, he collected stamps as a boy. He served in the U.S. Army as a Medic, stateside during the Korean War era. That led to his distinguished career in medicine after he got out. He also had an MA in History.

Somehow along the line, Larry started collecting WWII patriotic covers and that was how we first met in the 1970s.

Lawrence Sherman was the author of three classic philatelic reference books available from the APRL: The United States Post Office in WWII (2002), United State Patriotic Covers of WWII (1999), and United States Patriotic Envelopes Of WWII (2006). That last title using the more widespread term for covers was one that we came up with to try to interest a non-philatelic audience to the joys of cachet art.

Larry also published numerous philatelic articles for the this magazine and other philatelic publications such as LaPosta. He was still publishing such articles well up into his nineties.

Highly intelligent, patient and very thorough, Larry was a great conversationalist and he had a dry, keen sense of humor.

Larry left behind his wife of almost 70 years, Mimi, two successful sons and four adult grandchildren.
